Can a Sunken Paver Driveway Be Repaired in South Jersey?

By Tyler Warker · November 2, 2026

Before-and-after paver driveway work at a New Jersey home

A low spot in a paver driveway does not always mean the whole surface is finished. Because pavers are installed as individual units, a settled section can often be lifted and reused. The real question is what moved underneath. Around Egg Harbor Township, heavy rain, sandy soil, freeze-thaw cycles, and turning vehicle tires can expose weak base work quickly.

Why do paver driveways sink or spread?

Most sinking starts below the surface. The stone base may be too thin, installed all at once instead of compacted in lifts, or placed over soft soil that was never fully removed. A utility trench or old tree-root area can also settle later. Water makes each problem worse when the driveway has low spots, poor pitch, or runoff washing fine material out of the base. Along the perimeter, weak edge restraint lets pavers spread under turning tires. Adding joint sand may tighten the surface for a while, but it cannot rebuild a failed base underneath.

Can the settled section be repaired without replacing everything?

Usually, yes, when the low area is limited and the rest of the driveway is stable. The repair starts by lifting the affected pavers and removing loose bedding material. Then the failed area has to be dug back to firm material, rebuilt with compacted stone in thin lifts, and pitched so water leaves instead of sitting. The original pavers can be reset, the edge restraint repaired if needed, and the joints filled again. A broader rebuild makes more sense when several areas are wavy, water crosses the whole driveway the wrong way, edges are spreading on both sides, or the same spots keep sinking after earlier repairs.

These guides explain the pavers and base work behind a lasting repair: choosing driveway pavers, how a paver base is built, paver patio and hardscape work.

A useful repair estimate should identify why the driveway moved, not just price the visible dip.
