How Do You Clean and Re-Sand Paver Joints the Right Way?

By Tyler Warker · August 17, 2026

Tight, freshly filled paver joints on a South Jersey patio

Joint sand is a working part of a paver patio, not just filler between the blocks. It helps the pavers share weight, keeps the edges from rubbing, and makes it harder for weeds and ants to move in. South Jersey downpours, winter freeze-thaw, pressure washing, and normal foot traffic slowly carry that sand away, so even a solid patio may need its joints refreshed.

How can you tell when paver joints need new sand?

Look for joints that are low, hollow, or collecting dirt. Loose pavers, widening gaps, ants pushing sand onto the surface, and weeds returning soon after cleanup are other signs. The sand should sit slightly below the top edge of the paver, not inches down in the joint. If the whole patio is sinking or holding puddles, fresh sand will not fix it; that points to a base or grading problem that needs to be corrected first.

What is the right way to clean and re-sand the joints?

Start with a dry surface and remove weeds, dirt, and loose old sand without blasting out the bedding layer under the pavers. A pressure washer can help, but the nozzle should stay at a safe angle and distance so it does not chip edges or dig deep channels. Let the patio dry fully before sweeping polymeric sand across it. Work the sand into every joint, compact the surface so it settles, top the joints off, and blow every grain off the paver faces. Then mist the area exactly as the sand manufacturer directs. Too little water leaves loose sand; too much can wash the binder out or leave a haze. Pick a dry weather window so a South Jersey thunderstorm does not hit before the joints set.

If the patio needs more than fresh joint sand, these guides explain what to check next: paver patio installation, signs of a bad paver install, how long paver patios last.

A careful cleaning and re-sand can tighten up a patio and make it look finished again. If pavers are rocking, edges are spreading, or low spots keep coming back, we can lift the problem area, repair the base, and reset the same pavers before the damage grows. Call T.W.
